2010 State Championships
Dimond High had a successful trip in Fairbanks for the state championships last weekend. Even though the temperatures were hovering around zero most of the weekend the athletes showed their competitiveness and pushed through the frigid air.

Our girls team ended in 5th place beating West High School by 20 seconds, a school who had beat Dimond all season. Our boys team ended in 14th place taking out Eagle River High School. Eagle River beat Dimond by about 3 minutes at the Region IV championships.

Individually, our skiers had many star performances. Our star freshman, Marion Woods, is the 2010 classic technique state champion. She beat out Celia Haering of West by 1.7 seconds and Hannah Boyer of West Valley by 5.1 seconds. This lifted Marion from eighth place into second place overall for the two days combined, called the skimeister. See the Fairbanks Daily News Miner article here.

Lastly, I want to extend a very big thank you to Shelly Laws, Kristy Calhoun, Duane Hippe, and Ben Richardson for all their help this weekend. They all played a crucial role in the team's success ranging from driving items up to Fairbanks to cooking meals for the athletes to getting the athletes pumped up and ready to race. Thank you!

If you would like to see results from the weekend you can follow the link in the Races section of the website for comprehensive packet of results or you can look at http://skiraces.sportalaska.com/2009-2010/21-45-asaa-all/asaa_main.htm for specific details about each race.

Coach Roth's ski bag still missing
Attention all athletes and parents. Please check at home to make sure you do not have coach Roth's ski bag. It is a green ski bag with red highlights. There are skis and poles in the bag (multiple sets of both) that say "Roth" all over them and some have his phone number on them as well. They have been missing ever since the East Classic Relays. He is racing the tour of Anchorage this weekend and would like to have his skis back for the race.

Thanks.

Banquet Date
The end of season banquet date is still up in the air, currently we are looking at March 29th as March 30th is a blackout date with the school district. I will have a final date for the banquet soon.

Caped/Masked Villian?
Coach Roth's ski bag mysteriously disappeared following the Valentine Relays. Our sources say the bag made it off the bus however, a caped mystery person swiped it while in transit from the bus to the ski room. Eye witnesses confirmed the villian as being around 14-18 years of age and...

Video + Pictures
Now that the Lynx Loppet is over, I am looking for a parent or 5 that would be interested in taking pictures and/or video taping during races. I have a video camera that can be used for this task. The next race we might video at would be the Skiathlon at Kincaid. This incorporates both techniques and would be nice to get shots of the skiers.
Also, if you have (digital) photos of the event(s) that you would like to share or you would like to take photos, please send them my way as I can post a thumbnail of the photo on the website and the team could possibly use it for the end of season banquet.

Training Information
I found this document on the ANR website and I believe it a good summary of ideas for training. It also uses definitions some athletes on the team used during the year. If you didn't understand what they were saying, this document defines Levels and Periodization.

I have edited it a little bit to fix some typos. But here is the document:
